AK Properties was born out of the desire to raise the bar to another level… Constantly!!

Having grown up and gone to school in the Algarve my whole background had been leading me to this point… Getting to know the area, the language, the contacts, the market. Not to mention having both parents involved with real estate in the Algarve since the 1980’s!

After growing up here and then returning to the UK to finish my formative education with college and university, I spent 3 years gaining experience working for one of the largest real estate groups in the UK (Countrywide). Upon reaching management level I decided it was high time to return to the Algarve and do the same thing, albeit with far more luxurious properties, and in the gorgeous sunshine – It wasn’t a very hard choice to make!

In early 2016 after 13 years in the industry, I made the decision that in order to provide the best service I possibly could to my clients there were drastic changes that needed to be implemented. That’s when I knew that the only way I’d be able to put my clients needs at the very top of the list, was if company policy fell squarely on my shoulders.

In mid 2016 I left my previous employer and set to work on creating the solid foundations, and implementing the systems and infrastructure necessary to build AK Properties into a leading force in luxury real estate within the Golden Triangle.

In the space of just one year we’ve managed to grow to a team of 5, with state of the art offices and a relentless momentum to carry us forward at a pace that ought to strike fear into the very hearts of our competitors. We have a clearly defined plan and have every intention of redefining real-estate in the whole area.

A cultural marvel, Lisbon is a city drenched in history and oozing with style. The coastal capital has a reputation for world-class seafood restaurants and amazing architecture. Portugal’s first and largest city boasts seven cinematic hillsides, the tops of which deliver some of the most incredible views in Portugal. From Gothic grit to glamour, Lisbon should be on every weekend-breakers must visit list. This article lists some of the best things to see in Lisbon.

The Elevator de Santa Justa lift

Every tourist should experience the view from the top of the Santa Justa Lift. The industrial age elevator functions as a transportation service to tourists wishing to save time and avoid walking uphill. It elevates passengers from the Baixa district up to the Igreja do Carmo church which sits on top of one of Lisbon’s many hills.

The outer ironwork structure of the elevator has been crafted to form superb neo-gothic arches, and the interior of the carriages are lined with sleek polished wood. Once at the top of the platform, visitors can witness a spectacular view of Lisbon’s grid streets and rooftops.

At a measly price of €2.80, the Santa Justa Lift is a definite must see. The elevator is also part of the public transport network, so tourists with a travel ticket can ride for free! Tickets can be purchased on the Metro website, or from the metro station.

Culture vultures should be sure to visit at least one of the wealth of brilliant museums in Lisbon. From the first class Calouste Gulbenkian museum to the newly acclaimed Design Museum, there are collections for all tastes. Many museums in Lisbon are free on the first Sunday of every month, so it may be wise to plan your trip around these dates if travelling on a budget! Not sure which museum to choose? Read the 10 Top Lisbon Museums.

Torre de Belém

Torre de Belem is one of Portugal’s most renowned monuments and is a great example of Portuguese stonework dating back to the 1500s. The UNESCO world heritage site is situated inside the parish of Santa Maria de Belém and was built to guard the entrance of the Lisbon harbour. You can catch a 45 minute tram to Belem from central Lisbon.

The Mercado da Ribeira

Lisbon’s historic market hall is home to 35 permanent stalls from Lisbon’s most celebrated foodie restaurants and shops. The food court area was adopted by Time Out in 2014 and is now referred to as the Time Out Market Lisboa. Visitors can try Portuguese wines, ice creams and pastries from all over the country and visit the on-site eateries of the countries culinary hero- Henrique Sa Pessoa.

If you love small picturesque towns and romantic architecture, then Sintra is the place to go. The town is extremely beautiful and has become a huge tourist centre, mainly due to the mediaeval Castelo dos Mourous which sits on top of the Sintra Mountains.

Although Sintra is situated in the Lisbon Region of Portugal, it is an hour away from central Lisbon so be aware of this when visiting. Sintra may be a good choice for those spending more than one night in Lisbon.

Praca do Comercio

A vibrant urban development, the Praca do Comercio (Commerce square) sits in the centre of the city, alongside the banks of the river Tagus. The square is also referred to as ‘Terreiro do Paco’ (Palace square) as it lies on the previous site of the Royal Ribeira Palace which was destroyed during The Great Lisbon earthquake. The earthquake destroyed much of Lisbon in 1755, which lead to the development of the Pombaline Downtown that we see today. The square faces out towards the river, and the Cristo Rei (statue of Christ) which overlooks the city of Lisbon.

Vale do Garrao Beach (also known as Julia’s Beach)

Probably the hot spot beach to go in central Algarve, this one is certainly one of my favourites as I have been going to this beach since is was 6 years old! It’s a five minute drive from Dunas Douradas and has a large car park (which gets rather dusty in the summer). The offical name is Vale do Garrao, but you will hear loads of people referring to it as “Julia’s Beach” or simply “Julia’s”. There are five fantastic mouth-watering beach restaurants that have plenty of fresh sea-food and refreshing cocktails to offer.

This beach is patrolled by life guards, so you will always know that there is an extra pair of eyes looking out for your kids (if you do have kids that is). You can hire jet ski’s and pedalow’s if you are up for some beach action. One of the most striking and visual features on this beach is certainly the terracotta-red cliff’s that make this area of the Algarve so unique.

But before you rush off to the first beach bar/restaurant, keep in mind that they are NOT the cheap Portuguese beach bars that you would find further down the coast.! You are in one of the Algarve’s prime locations, especially for wealthy tourists and residents who flood Julia’s beach during peak season’s. I suggest you check out the menu before ordering food, but I can guarantee that your meal will be fresh, delicious and more than fulfilling.

Being on the beach and breathing that fresh sea breeze really opens up your appetite!

During your stay at Vale do Lobo (or nearby areas), you should definitely check-out the local Portuguese markets which offer a true and unique experience in a vibrant atmosphere, so here

Quarteira Fish Market (Saturday Mornings)

Quarteira is a Portuguese Beach front town which is a short distance from Vale do Lobo. it belongs to the same council, which is Loule, and is approximately a 15min drive from Vale do Lobo. On the furthest Western side of Quarteira, along the beach front, they have a local fish market on Saturday mornings which sells…you guessed it:FISH!

There is an incredible variety of fresh seafood that has been freshly caught by the local fishermen. There are also clothes stands that sale summer clothing, hats, towels and beach gear and very reasonable prices. You will also find some great typical Portuguese cafes where you will enjoy authentic Portuguese coffee, or perhaps a beer or two? Your choice.

Fonte Santa Gypsy Market (also referred to as Quarteira Gypsy Market – Wednesday Mornings)

This is a MUST-SEE attraction that you cannot afford to miss. And it is literally a mile away from Vale do Lobo! If you know where the famous Marufo (aka Chicken Shack) restaurant is, then you will find this market quite easily as it is held in the big flat open area opposite the restaurant (please find map below).

Most of the vendors at this market are from Portuguese Gypsy origin, and they sell items such as jewelry, clothing, shoes and plenty of other accessories. It is a vibrant atmosphere with plenty on offer. Needless to say, if you come across a Ralph Lauren shirt that is being sold for 10 euros – don’t expect it to be genuine!

You will always find knock-off designer label at these types of markets, but you will also find high quality leather shoes and belts, umbrella’s, beach towels and summer dresses that are decent quality and outstanding value.

Loule Fish & Farmers Market (Saturday Mornings)

Loule is the main city of Loule council – which is where Vale do Lobo is located. It is a beautiful traditional Portuguese town, full of life, stunning architecture and a real Portuguese atmosphere. The local farmers market is held in a recently renovated Arabic hall building in the centre of town. You will find many sign-posts as you are approaching Loule, and will probably find it difficult to park as you approach the town centre.

Most of the produce that is for sell in this Portuguese market is from local farmers, so plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, cured Portuguese meats and the Fish market that sells freshly caught seafood. There are also plenty of market sellers that offer tradional Portuguese wicca furniture and ceramic ornaments that make great original souvenirs to decorate your home with.

Vale do Lobo is an upmarket beach-side golf resort which has two of the finest courses in southern Europe, a beautiful clean beach, luxury bars and restaurants, clubhouses, entertainment, health clubs and hundreds of villas and apartments that are available for rent or to purchase.

It is only a 20 minute drive from Faro airport, and is centrally placed in the Algarve with good roads and connections. It belongs to the council of Loule which is one of the largest and wealthiest councils in the Algarve.

Vale do Lobo first started to develop all the way back in 1962, in times where there were hardly any cars on the roads, and the Algarve was mostly populated by fishermen and farmers.

It was even clear at that time, among the very small amount of tourists and bidding entrepreneurs, that Vale do Lobo had unique qualities and had lots of potential to develop into a popular destination.

They were right. And over 50 years of different managers, innovative ideas, and hard work, Vale do Lobo has now become the most prestigious resort in Portugal and is recognized worldwide.

Many local and international golf tournaments are organized here, and also tennis is one of the major sporting attractions that Vale do Lobo has to offer.

One of the main nightlife entertainment areas is called “The Praca”. This means square in Portuguese, and you will find a variety of fine dining restaurants, including a steak house, exotic beach side cocktail bars, and a nightclub called gecko’s that is very popular with the younger crowd as it stays open to 4am/5am depending on the season/day.

It is the best place to go if you are looking to live or spend a holiday in a luxurious ambiance, that is family friendly, where the sun shines over 300 days a year, where you can speak to everyone in English, enjoy great food, relax and even meet world famous celebrities and sportsmen and women
