It’s a worry when we get ill. It is even more of a worry when you are not in your home country. Though some of us battle with the language of the country we chose to live, we still all prefer to speak our native tongue when issues as important as our health is concerned.

Fluent English and German speaking Dr Thomas Kaiser at the Vale do Lobo Medical Centre offers a comprehensive medical service and is conveniently located at the entrance of Vale do Lobo and also at Quinta do Lago. Dr Kaiser is a well respected General Practitioner and heads the team. A cardiologist, Gynaecologist, Ophthalmologist, Dentist, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgeon, Counsellor, Chiropractor, Psychiatrist, Nurse, Midwife, Ear Nose and Throat specialist are all provided by appointment. From an ear infection, tooth ache, to botox and fillers, all your medical needs are fully catered for at the clinic. 24 hour emergency service and house calls, ECGʼs, blood tests, stress tests, and home nursing are also provided. They work closely with the leading private hospitals of the Algarve and Lisbon.

As an expatriate abroad, having confidence in medical facilities for your family is a major concern. With the new EU medical card, all British Citizens are entitled to be treated at the local Centro do Saudes (Portuguese Health Centres) and the state Hospitals. A small charge is made for each visit or test.

The union between England and Portugal goes back to 1901 where a written agreement stated that the English will treat the Portuguese and vice versa. The new EU medical card has superseded this, but the treatment remains the same. The downside to state treatment is the length of time to wait, and the language barrier. Private health cover is available through the major insurers, and holiday medical insurance is always advised when traveling.
