What to do in Dunas Douradas

Guestpost by Susan Kelly, local expert and travel writer:

When choosing your holiday you want your dreams to turn into reality.  After all you have saved and worked hard for this annual delight.

Just imagine, a little over 2 hours flight duration and you have arrived at your dream destination – the Algarve.

As the plane doors open you can smell the air is different – heat from the sunshine and the cool Atlantic breezes caress your soul.  Immediately you know you have arrived somewhere special.

The Algarve coastline can boast the most beautiful beaches in Southern Europe and a short drive from Faro International airport your holiday accommodation awaits you.

Dunas Douradas Beach Club is currently exciting all the holidaymakers.  This newly built resort is truly 5 star and has wonderful rental opportunity for all year round holidays with a great selection of villas and apartments.  As the name Dunas Douradas suggests, this holiday complex overlooks the sea and golden beaches.  You can walk to the beach from here or use the fabulous swimming pool with restaurant and bar.  Your holiday rental might be a modern hi-tech villa, a 3, 4 or 5 * hotel, a trendy apartment.

Dunas Douradas is located close to the Ria Formosa nature reserve, one of Portugal’s largest wetland areas, characterised by the estuary, extensive marshes and Salinas, the pools where natural sea salt is made.  This is nature at it’s finest, offering you the opportunity to see over 300 species of birds in their natural habitat – herons, storks, spoonbills, flamingos and water fowl.

If that is not for you – why not partake of a gentle walk through the nature reserve.  You can stroll through the umbrella pine forests which offer you their shade and smell the resinous pine fragrance floating on the peaceful air.    The only sound that is heard is the rustle of the pine needle covered forest floor.

Sink your toes into the hot sand or paddle in the Ria Formosa waters.  These inland lagoons are rich in fish and clams.  Early mornings are a delight as you will see the fisherman dredging through the mud for their bait.  Families with buckets and spades sifting through the sand for clams and mussels for supper.

Why not walk across the wooden bridge that takes you over the lagoon onto the golden sandy beach.

Outdoor dining at Dunas Douradas Beach Club is a summer experience not to be missed.   Close by you can discover plenty of restaurants and bars overlooking the sea, perched atop the terracotta red cliffs.   Watch the sunset or the moon rising whilst sipping your drink and awaiting your dinner.  Shooting stars darting through the night sky.  Am I still dreaming, I hear you ask yourself?

A warm welcome awaits you from the Portuguese people.  Slide back in time and visit the Algarve, where the hours pass slowly affording you plenty of time to relax.

What more do you want ….. horse riding, playing a round of golf, visiting the Saturday street market, wine tasting  a game of tennis?   Perhaps all you feel like doing is sitting by your own secluded swimming pool keeping an eye on the kids.

You want more I hear you say – 3000 hours of sunshine each year, dolphin watching, fishing trips, a boat trip out to the Lighthouse.

Perhaps I have managed to tempt you to book your holiday and visit the Algarve.
