As an expatriate abroad, having confidence in medical facilities for your family is a major concern. With the new EU medical card, all British Citizens are entitled to be treated at the local Centro do Saudes (Portuguese Health Centres) and the state Hospitals. A small charge is made for each visit or test.
The union between England and Portugal goes back to 1901 where a written agreement stated that the English will treat the Portuguese and vice versa. Private health cover is available through the major insurers, and holiday medical insurance is always advised when traveling.
